Having finally downloaded the pictures from my new camera, I have to take this opportunity to brag about my wonderful, caring, talented, romantic, husband...

For my birthday (which was in September) Craig fixed a beautiful breakfast of coffee cake, hard boiled eggs, strawberries, canadian bacon, sausage, tea, and orange juice, while I got to just relax. He also gave my very first dozen roses a few days before (so I wouldn't be expecting them) and another small bouquet on the actual day. The night before my birthday he hid coupons around the house for things like a foot rub and doing the dishes.  I just used the first one of them last night, and got a great back rub.

But in case you think he's getting too soft and romantic, here are a couple of pictures of him teaching Roy manners. I guess you never can truly civilize a guy!  (I'm still working on trying to get his socks to end up in the laundry hamper and not on the floor, but some things take a long time to learn). Since I pretty much haven't posted all summer, I will try to give a brief summary of our recent happenings. In June we took a trip to Michigan for a friend's wedding. We economized by camping with Craig's family (who came up and joined us). It was a short time, but we really enjoyed being together.

In August Roy and I spent a week with Craig's parents at their house in Illinois. All the cousins were there too, and we had a blast! Roy especially loved playing with his cousin Tsuriel, who is only one month apart in age. The week was organized like a Vacation Bible School, with classes (we learned about space), crafts, and activities. Roy and Tsuriel didn't listen to the lessons very well, but they really enjoyed going to the zoo, Wild West Town, and the swimming pool. I loved watching the children play together and catching up with family.

We were only home about a week before we left again, this time for a two-day camping trip at a state park on Virginia Beach. It was the first time we had tried camping and beaching at the same time... the first thing I learned was that we would have to eat, sleep, and breathe sand! The weather was a little windy and cool, so we had the beach almost entirely to ourselves. The water was quite swimmable and the wind made the waves a ton of fun. Roy LOVED the sand! He would take off crawling as fast and as far as he could, swishing his limbs around to move the sand and stopping now and then to let it run through his fingers. Pretty soon we gave up trying to keep him clean and even trying to take the sand and sticks out of his mouth (it was a hopeless cause anyway). He handled his freedom responsibly though-- he eventually figured out that sand really isn't very tasty and stopped trying to eat it. :-p  When we took Roy down to the water he eagerly crawled right into the ocean. He loved to feel the surf coming and going, and when Craig took him out further in his arms he would laugh when he saw the big waves coming.

In mid-September we traveled once again, this time to Texas to be with my family. The purpose of the trip was my sister Eleanor's baptism, although we arrived in time for a family reunion to celebrate my grandmother's 75th birthday. Roy and I stayed on a few days after Craig headed back home to work. It was a really special time to reconnect with my family and get to know my siblings again. Roy loved all the attention! He almost always had somebody, if not two or three somebodies, crawling around on the floor with him to make sure he was having fun. Now I have to teach him how to amuse himself again.

In between visiting family and going camping, we have amused ourselves by hiking, biking, swimming in the pool at our apartment complex, laying in the grass and reading books, taking advantage of our new and gorgeous library, (mostly by checking out movies, I must confess) going to a ball game in DC, watching fireworks on the 4th of July, and just generally enjoying life. The weather is getting cooler now and I am once again having to come to grips with the fact that summer is ending, but I certainly have enjoyed this one!

Conveniently located near the nation's capital and in the heart of beautiful historic Virginia, Leesburg is a town well worth visiting. Here are a few of the highlights of everyday life.

Work

If you have an appetite for work, there are plenty of exciting opportunities. You simply need to be quick enough to seize them.

Recreation

We boast a variety of entertainment choices. Besides the conventional toys, stuffed animals, and rattles, there are many exciting venues to explore such as tablecloths, blinds, and dirt from the sliding glass door runner. (note: the dirt is no longer available due to unavoidable circumstances).

Study

If you are the serious sort, there are plenty of opportunities for focused research. Popular studies include farm animals and the early phases of childhood development.

Outdoor activities

The summer months are simply bursting with outdoor opportunities! Hiking, biking, swimming, grill-outs, picnics in the grass, stroller rides, raspberry picking... even waterfalls for the adventurous to explore!

Fine Dining

Of course, no place is complete without plenty of opportunities for eating well. Favorite items include watermelon and applesauce.

If you are ever passing by, make sure to stop by and enjoy all Leesburg has to offer!

Earlier this spring Craig got a nice road bike for commuting to our church, where he works. It's about 13 miles one way, most of which are on the paved bike trail. Curious to see if I could do it, I started borrowing his bike to try the ride myself. I liked it so much I often rode home from church, and once even rode to church, leaving Craig to manage both the baby and the set-up team. (I guess dads have to learn to multi-task too). The only downside was that the bike is so big Craig had to put the seat on its lowest level for me, and even then I had to tip it over in order to jump on. And of course the guy's seat hurt terribly and actually made my seat fall asleep... and the handlebars are so far away I had to extend pretty far to reach them. So yesterday we decided I could get my own bike, complete with a child seat for Roy. I woke up feeling like it was my birthday, and couldn't wait for the day to drag by so we could go pick it out. We got for me a really nice lightweight Trek roadbike, the women's version of Craig's. It's a muted tan color and quite attractive. I was eager to ride it home from the bike shop (maybe 9 miles or so) and loved it! It's such a good feeling to go gliding along, smelling the evening scents and refreshed by a light breeze, feeling energetic and strong. By the time I got home it was 8:30 and I was VERY ready for the lovely spaghetti dinner Craig had prepared. This morning I took Roy for his first bike ride ever. He didn't enjoy it much, but I think he just needs to get used to it. Here are a couple of pictures:

We just got back from a week-end away to celebrate our two-year anniversary. Craig took off work early Friday afternoon, and after struggling through miserable traffic we arrived in Maryland at Heather and JJ's apartment. I left Roy there, for the first time besides one dinner when a friend watched him, along with a lot of baby items and instructions, and Craig and I drove on to nearby Annapolis. We had arranged to stay at a low-end B&B that night, but the proprietor called us last minute to ask if we would be willing to stay at a different B&B he operates, so that a group could rent all the rooms at the one we had booked. For the modest price of our original room, we were upgraded to a brand new luxury room in gorgeous downtown Annapolis, boasting a king-sized bed, a private jacuzzi, and a steam room/shower complete with mood lighting. I was ecstatic!

It turned out to be a good thing that we were in such a central location, because the evening was rather wet. We dressed up and headed out to look for a place to eat, trying to fit under our small umbrella and not ruin our clothes. It didn't take too long to find a charming French cafe, where we treated ourselves to a heavenly dish of Brie cooked in honey and almonds, followed by duck with raspberry sauce for me and chicken in cream sauce for Craig. Our waitor had an authentic French accent and even a bit of French personality when it came to food!

By the time we were done eating the weather had cleared, so we were able to stroll downtown and enjoy the beautiful area. The next morning we were treated to a hot breakfast, served at the lazy hour of 9 AM, and then set out to explore Annapolis. Craig really enjoyed visiting the Naval Academy, and I liked the charming shops and streets.

By lunch time I was VERY ready to get back to my baby, so we made our way back to Heather and JJ's place for lunch. If all anniversaries are this much fun I hope we have a lot of them!
